Q: I want to renovate, but I've heard and seen so many horror stories that I'm a bit intimidated. I don't want to be a statistic! How do I avoid making mistakes while renovating my house?A: Great question! First off, don't let other people's stories get to you. There is a lot that goes into renovating and a lot of common errors are absolutely avoidable. Renovating is work, but it doesn't need to be drudgery. Here are four ways to avoid mistakes in your renovating project to make the experience as enjoyable and rewarding as possible!

  1. Have a plan. Spend the time to really think through your goals, your options, your budgets, your time frames and how you are going to deal with your space during the period it is undergoing a change.
  2. Sweat the small stuff--in the right way! Things like school holidays, work bonuses, and even annual weather patterns should be considered to ensure the time that you want to renovate is right for you. Really evaluate whether you are in a place to handle an overhaul of a living space. Renovation can be disruptive, but by taking the time to identify the best start time for your project, and putting some thought into how you and your family will manage it, you will avoid a lot of stress.
  3. Build and stick to a budget. Beautiful spaces can be built at good prices...but only if you are paying attention and tracking your project's growth. Renovations are usually done to add value to your home, both in terms of your lifestyle and your home's profitability. Don't put a dent in the latter at the outset by failing to plan!
  4. Choose experienced professionals. One contractor might be a genius at fitting cabinetry or metalwork, but that doesn't mean he or she is good at installing a pool. If you want quality work, spend the time and effort to hire contractors who have a proven track record in the job you are hiring them to do. There are specialists out there, find and use them!
